"Hemlock Grove," Netflix's next original online series after "House of Cards," has some style and the occasional flash of wit. One comes at the end of the second episode, when a teenage character undergoes a gruesome transformation, and his mother, played by the always appealing Lili Taylor, wears a smug smile, as if to say, "See what my boy can do?"

TV review: 'Hemlock Grove' wallows in its own fake guts

Netflix's latest attempt at episodic television vacillates between being a monster-mash version of 'Glee' and a hard-R rip-off of 'Grimm.' Watch it at your own peril. Back when I was young and the world was new and only one kid we knew had a (very small, black-and-white) TV in his room, my cousins, my brother and I used to put on plays in the basement. We were big fans of "Night Stalker," so ...

Eli Roth's 'Hemlock Grove': Gory, campy, and perfect for a marathon viewing

|
You're probably going to see a lot of negative reviews for Netflix's "Hemlock Grove" this weekend... and they're sort of right. It's campy, but it doesn't seem to embrace its camp. The acting is, generally, just... bad. The gore is gratuitous, the dialogue is clunky, and the story is packed with tropes. But all of these things might just be what makes the show work for Netflix. The series, from ...

Eli Roth's 'Hemlock Grove' live on Netflix

It's probably not the best news for Eli Roth's "Hemlock Grove" that I didn't hate it -- and not just because "didn't hate it" will never make it as a pullout quote in any ad, as much as I might long to see it there.

A teen scarefest that looks like a big-screen movie

Hemlock Grove has most of the markings of a teen scarefest - will you be Team Roman or Team Peter? - except for its um, emphatically mature displays of nudity, violence, and profanity.

Costume designer from Lower Mount Bethel 'fell in love' with indie film's script. With a pair of movies, a TV show and an NBC pilot in the pipeline, costume designer Amy Roth has never been busier. Over the last year, the Lower Mount Bethel Township resident has costumed such actors as Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, Meagan Good and Blair Underwood.

Rent It Anyone who saw Anywhere USA -- a list that's probably less than five hundred people long -- likely took notice of young actor Perla Haney-Jardine. Most people will have seen her in Kill Bill Vol. 2 as Beatrix Kiddo's daughter, but she steals Anywhere away from an eclectic cast with a performance that conveys deeper and more complicated emotions in 20 minutes than many adult actors ...
