‘Kiss of the Damned,’ Directed by Xan Cassavetes

Joséphine de la Baume and Milo Ventimiglia in this film. Harking back to the cheesy sex-and-sucking extravaganzas of the 1970s — only with worse acting and shinier production values — “Kiss of the Damned” tries to give the vampire movie something it most definitely does not need: class.

The Kiss of the Damned . Just what we need—another sophomoric, oversexed vampire movie. You can’t accuse writer-director Xan Cassevetes of lacking imagination. Well photographed, lurid enough to cause concern for the teen market it aims to captivate, and with enough blood to refurbish an abattoir, Kiss of the Damned creates an eerie, foreboding anxiety that comes uneasily close to terror. Too ...

Photo credit: Getty Images “ “I got balls and guts,” Gary Stevens tweeted on the evening of Feb. 23. The barb was directed at an armchair critic who blasted the legendary jockey's ride in that day's Risen Star Stakes — at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, in New Orleans. Stevens’ mount, Proud Strike, finished eighth in the race, and some fans in the blogosphere blamed the rider. Stevens felt ...

When Kathryn Bigelow won the Best Director Oscar for The Hurt Locker in 2010, it shined a spotlight on the struggle of female filmmakers in the industry. It took a staggering eighty-two Academy Award ceremonies for a woman to win the Best Director trophy, and only three other women had ever been nominated: Lina Wertmüller (1976's Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (1993's The Piano), and Sofia ...

The Flaming Lips’ worst album--or is it? Round two

Criticism is at its best when it’s a spirited dialogue between two people who care passionately about the art. And I can think of very few folks besides Brendan Diamond who have cared as much about the Flaming Lips for as long as I have. Within an hour of me posting my review of The Terror last week, Brendan had responded in the comments section of this blog, and the back-and-forth we began ...

Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump wants to make something clear. "In no world did my [solo] record not sell and my thing flopped and then I go, 'OK, well, I'll go back to Fall Out Boy,'" the 28-year-old frontman says by phone from London. "[Bleep] no. Whether or not people like [the new album], I think it's audible, you can tell in the music that we do that we are happy to be making this record ...

The saga of Spartacus the show and Spartacus the man came to end on Friday night with the series finale of the Starz swords, sex, and sandals drama. The titular slave-turned-gladiator-turned-rebellion leader was on the verge of killing Roman nemesis Marcus Crassus when he was speared from behind.
